What happens in Mysore?

It’s like this super special secret club ;-) Just kidding - although I do realise that for those that have yet to try it it can seem that way!

Questions I usually get asked are along the lines of:

  • ‘What if I forget the sequence?’

  • ‘What if I am the only person who doesn’t know what to do?’ etc

Which quickly get replaced with:

  • ‘Oh my gosh, why didn’t I try this before!?!’ and,

  • ‘Ah, so THIS is what yoga is really all about!’

The thing about us homo-sapiens is that we are all the same, yet different… Different strengths, histories and most probably a few injuries along the way, all leading us to this point, right here, right now. So how can a class that is EXACTLY THE SAME for everybody ever be completely right for everybody? Well, it simply can’t - that is like saying we should all enjoy Brussels sprouts… just silly.

Put it this way, if you wanted to learn to play the piano, you would learn your scales first. Then practice, practice and even more practice…. You would not expect the grand piano master to be doing exactly the same practice as you, not just yet at any rate.

In Mysore we teach you the scales, one pose at a time. This makes it easier to remember, so you don't forget - and if you do, we all do sometimes, just ask :-) After a while you notice that those scales/poses are flowing - effortlessly and you learn a few more… and so over time we build up your practice. As your practice grows so do you (not THAT way…), you feel stronger, more confident, and happier.

Then one day you notice that you are no longer the newbie in the room. There is someone else, and you smile …remembering. You hear your breath, and the breath of the person next to you, and the breath of the room. Everyone is doing a similar practice, yet slightly different. Everyone doing what is uniquely absolutely right for themselves.
